Bulls Open Niagara Regional Tournament on High Note

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team rolled to 16 wins in 18 matches on Saturday as the opening day of the Niagara Regional Tournament got underway at Niagara University. UB's 16 total wins were the most of any of the four teams at the weekend tournament.

UB swept host Niagara in singles play in the hidden duals format. Senior Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) scored a "double-bagel" victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Vanja Lakic. Freshmen Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) came away with 6-1, 6-0 victories in their matches against the Purple Eagles.

Smaranda Stan

Against St. Bonaventure, UB went 4-2 in singles play with sophomore Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorge, Romania/Economic) picking up a "double-bagel" 6-0, 6-0 win over Titina Delgado. Senior Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) scored a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Yolanda Callaghan.

UB also swept all three doubles contests with the Bonnies and Detroit. Against St. Bonaventure, the UB tandems of Nenova and Harijanto and Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Toia picked up 8-0 wins in their matches.

Play concludes on Sunday with singles matches against Detroit and doubles with Niagara.
