Bulls Post Impressive Results At Gopher Invite Two Bulls playing for third-place finishes in
singles
The Bulls have two players who are looking for a third-place finish tomorrow in their respective flights. Senior Denise Harijanto won her first two matches of the tournament as she defeated players from the Big Ten and the Big 12. Harijanto defeated Zuzana Chmelarova of Iowa, 6-2, 6-2 and then defeated Erin Karonis of Iowa State, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Harijanto dropped her first match of the tournament to Alessandra Ferazzi of Minnesota and will play for third place tomorrow against Madeline Geibert of Nebraska.
In the second singles flight, freshman Tamara Markovic also won her first two matches. She beat Peta Forsyth of Minnesota, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 and then beat Sampada Kanade of Iowa State, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1. Markovic dropped her first match to Alexa Palen of Minnesota and will be playing tomorrow for third place against Miriam Westernick of Eastern Michigan. Junior Aleksandra Petrova also went 2-1 in the second singles flight as she won her first match before dropping her second. Dropping into the consolation bracket, Petrova picked up a victory and will be battling for the consolation title tomorrow. In doubles, the regionally-ranked duo of Harijanto and Diana Popescu lost their opening match in first doubles, but came back to defeat a duo from Minnesota as they are in the consolation finals tomorrow. Petrova and Markovic will also be fighting for a consolation crown at second doubles as they face a team from Iowa State. In third doubles, which is a round robin format, UB’s crew of Anna Subenkova and Kira Golenko have won both of their matches and look to take the third doubles title tomorrow as they have one match left.
Action concludes at the Gopher Invite all day Sunday.
