The Bulls enjoyed a successful showing at the Bowling Green Invitational as UB emerged as the top team at the tournament. UB netters claimed four of seven singles crowns and two of the three doubles titles at the event which featured seven teams. There was no team scoring and several matches in the consolation brackets were not completed due to rain.

Bulls Take Four Singles Crowns

UB was guaranteed at least one singles title when play began on Sunday. At number two, Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) defeated teammate Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) in the final, 6-1, 6-4. Ortman defeated a pair of Mid-American Conference opponents in Bowling Green's Andrea Volle (3-6, 7-5, 6-1) and Toledo's Jenny Belsky (6-2, 6-1) to reach the finals. Nenova downed Youngstown State's Gina Perretti, 6-4, 6-2, then rallied in three sets to knock off Xavier's Jackie Villnes, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

At number three, Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) did not lose a set in rolling to the championship. She opened with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Xavier's Kara Courtney and then defeated Heidi Romer of Bowling Green, 6-2, 6-1. On Sunday, Fischer downed Xavier's Sara Potts, 6-1, 6-3, to claim the title. Fischer reached the finals of the same flight in last season's tournament but fell in straight sets.

Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North), in the number four flight, handily took care of her three opponents, winning in straight sets and allowing just three games to each victim. Dean opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Andrea Meister of Bowling Green then followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Wright State's Jessica Lee. In the championship match, she defeated Jenna O'Dell of Ferris State by a 6-1, 6-2 count.

At number five, Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) also scored three straight-set victories but needed a tiebreaker win in the title match to claim the title. On Saturday, she knocked off Krystle Hively of Youngstown State, 6-2, 6-0, and then downed Wright State's Karina Presti-Carpenter, 6-3, 6-3. In the championship match, she earned the win over Bowling Green's Stefanie Menoff, 7-6, 6-2.

Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Jacob, in the third flight, defeated the Xavier duo of Annie Diedalis and Jeanette Fieder, 8-4, in the championship.
