BOWLING GREEN, OH – The first day of the Bowling Green Invitational concluded on Saturday with a pair UB women’s singles players and a doubles duo reaching championship matches. There is no team scoring in the five-team tournament.

Six individuals and six doubles teams compete in the nine flights. Each flight is divided into two groups (Brown and Orange) consisting of three singles players or doubles teams playing a round-robin format. The winners of each group then are paired in the championship match.

In the first flight of singles action, UB freshman Andreea Novaceanu (Budapest, Romania/Emil Racovita) moved into Sunday’s championship with two victories in the Brown Group. Novaceanu opened with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Ferris State’s Molly Basha, then downed Xavier’s Lauren Clary, 6-2, 6-1 in her two matches on Saturday. Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect), playing in the Orange Group, was upset by Bowling Green’s Susie Schoenberger, 6-3, 6-2. Nenova had defeated Schoenberger in straight sets last season when the two Bulls and Falcons met in head-to-head competition. Nenova then defeated Kristen Clary of Xavier, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and will play Basha in the fifth-place match. Novaceanu will face Schoenberger, who lost to Xavier’s Kristen Clary, 6-3, 6-4, in the championship match.

Sophomore Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) reached the championship final in the third flight with a pair of easy victories in her Brown Group matches. Fischer rolled past Marie Caujolle of Indiana State, 6-2, 6-3 and then “double-bageled” Ferris State’s Allison Halbert, 6-0, 6-0 to reach the finals. She will face Xavier’s Emily Tuchscherer on Sunday. Tuchscherer scored a 6-3, 6-3 over UB’s Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) in the Orange Group. Jacob also fell to Bowling Green’s Andrea Volle, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) and will face Halbert in the fifth-place match.

In doubles play, Novaceanu and Jacob reached the finals of the second flight with an 8-5 win over Volle and Jenna Nussbaum of Bowling Green and an 8-6 victory over Ferris State’s Basha and Halbert in the Orange Group. The UB duo will face Brown Group victors Cam Benjamin and Ashley Jakupcin of Bowling Green on Sunday.
