Bulls Drop Three Non-Conference MatchupsBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis program dropped three non-conference matches this past weekend at the Nike Fall Classic held at St. Bonaventure University. The Bulls defeated Canisius College 5-2 on Sunday for their only win of the weekend. Sophomore Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) won her first singles match. Also picking up wins were juniors Kendra Pyke (Watertown, NY/Watertown), 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 and Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons), 6-4, 6-4. Pyke's victoy at fourth singles was the first of her UB career. The doubles duo of juniors Allison Heubusch (Tonawanda, NY/Tondawanda) and Nicole Sargent (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) defeated their opponent 6-3, 6-2. On Saturday, UB fell to Cleveland State, 5-2, with the Bulls only victory coming in doubles competition. The Duo of Sargent and Pyke picked up the win by default. Junior Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) played a tough three-set match, falling 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. In their next match, the Bulls were defeated 7-0 at the hands of the host school, St Bonaventure. Partelow and the doubles team of Sargent and Heubusch both took their respective matches to three sets in a losing effort. Playing Niagara in its second match on Sunday, UB fell 4-0. "We used these matches as tune ups early in the season. It allows us to see the strengths and weaknesses of our athletes," said UB Head Coach Kathy Twist. Coach Twist's team's record now stands at 2-5. The Bulls next see action on Sunday, October 15 against Youngstown State. Competition is set for 1 p.m. at the UB Tennis Center, Ellicott Complex.
