Women's Tennis Team Completes Princeton Invitational

Bulls break even in three-day meet

PRINCETON, NJ – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team concluded the three-day Princeton Invitational on Sunday picking up 16 singles and seven doubles victories against top-notch competition. Ohio State, Rutgers, Yale and the host Tigers completed the field in the hidden-duals format.

In Friday’s doubles play, UB won seven of the 15 matches, taking two of three over Rutgers and splitting four matches with Princeton and combined squad from Yale and Princeton. The doubles pairing of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) accounted for three of the wins as they went 3-1 in the four matches. After dropping a 9-7 decision to Ohio State’s Christina Keesey and Ciara Finucane, the UB duo won three straight, including a pair of 8-6 victories over Rutgers and Princeton opponents.

In singles play, the Bulls won 16 of the 29 matches played on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s matches against Rutgers, which the Bulls took six of seven from the Scarlet Knights was played in an eight-game pro-set format.

Novaceanu and Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) eached posted 3-1 records while Jacob went 2-1 in her singles matches. Novaceanu needed a third-set super-tiebreaker to defeat Princeton’s Ivana King, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) on Saturday and also picked up a straight sets win over Ohio State’s Julie Blackmore on Sunday.

Stan scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Princeton’s Laura Trimble on Saturday as the Bulls and Tigers split the eight matches, 4-4. She also scored a victory over Oliva Nix of Yale when Nix was forced to retire in the second set due to an injury.

Jacob scored a straight-sets win over Princeton’s Joanna Roth, 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday. She also defeated Rutgers’ Anela Dujsic, 8-2, on Sunday.

The Bulls are next in action on September 30 and October 1 at the Niagara Invitational.
