BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis program began its 2000-01 season by splitting a pair of home dual matches this weekend. The Bulls fell to Marist on Saturday, 4-3, but bounced back on Sunday, to defeat local-rival Canisius College, 5-2, at the UB Tennis Center, Ellicott Complex.

Against Marist, UB was led by its first, fourth and sixth singles players. Sophomore Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill), playing first singles for the first time in her career, defeated Kara Bliss, 6-2,6-2. Also posting wins for the Bulls were, junior Anne Schule (Snyder, NY/Amherst) and junior Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons), playing fourth and sixth singles respectively.

Also tallying a win for UB, playing third doubles, was the duo of juniors Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) and Allison Heubusch (Tonawanda, NY/Tondawanda), who downed their opponent, 8-1.

On Sunday, the Bulls started slow, posting only one win in doubles competition the Bulls' third doubles team of Amarasinghe and Heubusch pulled out an 8-4 win. However, despite the heavy wind conditions, UB bounced back in singles play, losing only one match. Maynard posted her second win of the weekend, downing her opponent, 6-2,6-0. Also posting a win for UB was second singles player, junior Kris Van Schoonhoven (Lockport, NY/Lockport), 6-2,7-5. Amarasinghe, Schule and Partelow, playing third, fourth and sixth singles for the Bulls, also all posted wins on Sunday.

The Bulls next compete on Saturday Sept. 23-24 at the St. Bonaventure Tournament, Olean, NY and will return home to the UB Tennis Center on Sunday, Oct. 15 for a 1 p.m. match with
