UB swept the singles matches, winning five matches in straight sets. The lone match to go past two sets was at number one as UB’s Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) rallied after dropping the opening set to Rochester’s Joanna Toke, 6-0, to defeat her opponent 6-3 in the second set and 10-7 in the tiebreaker.

Freshmen Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) were victorious in their collegiate debuts at second and third singles, respectively. Nenova downed Tara Pajoohi, 6-1, 6-2, while Fischer defeated Michelle Punj, 6-4, 6-1.

The remainder of the UB singles lineup also rolled to straight-set victories. Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) defeated Jill Adornetto, 6-3, 6-1, at number four. At number five, Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) breezed past Jaymi Della, 6-0, 6-1. Sixth singles player Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) knocked off Nell Aronoff, 6-2, 6-0, to complete the sweep for the Bulls.

In the doubles pairings, UB’s top team of Ortman and Kollarova lost to Toke and Pajoohi, 8-4 for the lone blemish on the day. At number two, Fischer and Nenova defeated Punj and Della, 8-6. The number three team of Onessa Williams (Albany, NY/Albany) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) defeated Adornetto and Dana Sall, 8-5. Also in a non-scoring doubles match, UB’s Zielinski and Wittman picked up an 8-2 win over Maya Guime and Tessa Baker.

The Bulls open their home slate next Sunday, September 21, when they host St. Francis (PA) at the UB Tennis Center starting at 10 am.
