Maynard, Pyke and Wong receive scholar-athlete recognition
BUFFALO, NY - Three members of the University at Buffalo
women's tennis team were named to the Mid-American Conference's
2000-01 Women's Tennis Honor Roll, as announced by the league office.
Juniors Kendra Pyke (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and
Jennifer Wong (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and sophomore
Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) all
received recognition from the MAC for their academic and athletic
performance. Student-athletes must obtain a minimum cumulative grade
point average of 3.00, earn a varsity letter for the current season
and have attended the institution for a full year to be eligible for
the honor.
The Bulls completed their season with a 3-16 overall dual meet
record and a 1-8 Mid-American Conference record. They earned their
first-ever MAC win on April 6, a 5-2 victory over Akron. Maynard, a
mechanical engineering major, was the Bulls' Most Valuable Player
during the 2000-01 season, posting a 1-10 overall record at first
singles. Her victory was a 6-4, 6-1 win over Arianna Rojas-Serpa in
Buffalo's win over Akron. Pyke, a geology major, was the Bulls' Most
Improved Player during the 2000-01 season, finishing the year with a
2-8 overall record and a 1-4 MAC record at fourth singles. She teamed
with Wong for an 8-4 victory at second doubles over Akron's Sara
Hirschy and Melissa Emich, securing the doubles point in Buffalo's
first-ever MAC victory. Wong, a mechanical engineering major, also
posted a 1-6 singles record during the year.
