Quest Falls Short For MAC Title
For the second consecutive season, the University at Buffalo women's tennis team secured the number two seed in the Mid-American Conference Championships and for the second consecutive season, the Bulls’ run at the title fell just short as UB dropped a 4-1 decision to Western Michigan in a rematch of the 2006 championship final. UB made its run through the tournament with a 4-0 victory over Ball State in the second round and a 4-1 win over host Toledo in the semifinals. The Bulls finished the 2006-07 campaign with a school record 17 wins, bettering last season’s mark of 16.
Bulls Place Three on All-MAC Squads
Miglena Nenova | Prior to the tournament, the Mid-American Conference announced its 2007 All-MAC teams and the Bulls were well-represented. Senior Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) scored her third nod to the first team. She completed her UB career with three first-team honors and was a second-team honoree in 2005. Junior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and freshman Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) made the All-MAC Second Team. It was Novaceanu’s third appearance on the All-MAC list after earning First Team honors in 2005 and 2006 while Harijanto was one of three freshmen to make the second team along with Ball State’s Sophie Quist and MAC Freshman of the Year Martina Wodzinski of Toledo. Harijanto defeated Wodzinski, 6-1, 6-0 in their meeting in UB’s semifinal match with the Rockets.
Fischer Wins MAC’s Sportsmanship Award
Katrin Fischer | Senior Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) won the Mid-American Conference’s LeAnn Davidge Grimes Sportsmanship Award at the league’s banquet. The sportsmanship award is voted on by the student-athletes from each school based on a player who has displayed outstanding sportsmanship in MAC competition. The award is named in honor of Leann Grimes Davidge, who served as Miami’s women’s tennis coach from 1978 until her tragic death in an automobile accident in January 1985. During her years as head coach, Miami won three outright MAC championships and shared another and was the MAC Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1983.
Dean, Fischer Named to All-Tournament Squad
Natalie Dean | With their run through the MAC Tournament, the Bulls garnered two spots on the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the championship final. Seniors Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) and Katrin Fischer closed out their careers by earning places on the squad. Dean was 1-0 in singles with two matches unfinished and 2-1 in doubles play in the tournament while Fischer was 2-0 in singles and it was her win over Toledo’s Jessica Azoulay in Saturday’s semifinal contest that put the Bulls in the championship final. Fischer finishes her senior season with a 19-4 singles record while Dean closed out the 2006-07 campaign with a 16-6 singles mark. In four seasons with the Bulls, Fischer scored 61 singles wins to place third on the all-time list. Dean, in just two years at UB, finished ninth all-time with 31 singles wins. Miglena Nenova concluded her four-year career as UB’s all-time singles and doubles leader with 67 singles and 74 doubles triumphs.
