Bulls Win 2008 MAC Championship The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team claimed its first ever MAC Title this past weekend, winning three matches including a come from behind 4-3 win over nationally-ranked Western Michigan in the conference finals. The title was not only the first for the women’s tennis team, but it was UB’s first ever postseason Mid-American Conference Title. The Bulls will now represent the MAC in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Stan Clinches All Three Matches, Named MVP Junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) was named the tournament’s most valuable player after clinching the win for the Bulls in all three matches at fourth singles. The most impressive of the three wins was her victory in the finals over Emily Dudzick of Western Michigan. Stan dropped the first set, but came back taking the second set 7-5. After falling behind early in the third set, Stan charged back to take a 5-4 lead and eventually served for the match, winning the set 7-5. The win for Stan was her 27th singles victory of the year, which is tied for the team lead. She was joined on the all-tournament team by sophomore Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia). Popescu Also Wins Three Matches Freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) also won all three of her matches during the conference tournament as she currently has 27 singles victories on the year. In fact, every player in the UB lineup won at least one match throughout the weekend. Seniors Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) claimed pivotal victories against Toledo, while Harijanto had victories against Miami and Western Michigan. Sophomore Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) also won her singles match against Western Michigan. Up Next The Bulls will find out their NCAA Tournament opponent on Tuesday afternoon during the NCAA Tournament selection show. First round action begins the weekend of May 9-10.
