BUFFALO, NY – Two University at Buffalo players were selected to the 2005 All-Mid-American Conference Women’s Tennis team. The league announced the awards at Thursday night’s Women’s Tennis Championship banquet held on the campus of Ball State University.

Freshman Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and sophomore Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) represented the Bulls among the 12 individuals named to the first and second teams. Novaceanu was named to the first team while Nenova, a first team selection in 2004, gained second team honors. Additionally, Novaceanu became the second consecutive Bull to earn the league’s Freshman of the Year award. Nenova won the honor last season.

Novaceanu earned first team honors after finishing the regular season with a team-best 19-5 singles record. She spent much of the spring season at first singles, compiling a 5-4 record against MAC competition. She went 10-1 during the fall in tournament play, winning singles titles at the Bowling Green and Dartmouth Big Green Invitationals as well as a doubles title at the Bowling Green event.

Nenova spent the regular season moving between numbers one and three on the singles ladder, settling at number two for much of the spring. She went 6-3 against MAC competition, including a 5-2 record at number two. She scored an important win in her lone MAC match at the number three spot with a three-set win over Ball State’s Haly Calderwood to give the Bulls a 4-3 win on April 2. Overall, Nenova is 13-9 in singles play and 12-10 in doubles play.

Marshall’s Ashley Kroh was selected as the Player of the Year while Western Michigan’s Betsy Kuhle earned her league record fifth Coach of the Year title.

UB, 8-6 overall and 4-5 in MAC play, opens play on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the tournament seeded sixth, the highest in school history. The Bulls face third-seeded Miami (OH) on Friday morning.
