Season Comes To A Close At MAC Tournament

The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team was unable to defend it’s MAC Title this past weekend falling in a marathon five-hour match against Western Michigan on Saturday in the MAC Semifinals. The two teams played to their third straight 4-3 decision. Earlier in the tournament, UB defeated Eastern Michigan 4-0 in the quarterfinal round.

Harijanto, Stan Pick Up Multiple Wins

Senior Smaranda Stan and junior Denise Harijanto both picked up a pair of singles victories over the weekend and they also each picked up doubles wins against Eastern Michigan. Harijanto won both of her matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-0 victory over two-time MAC Player of the Year, Kerstin Pahl from Western Michigan. Stan provided the clinching match against Eastern Michigan with her straight sets victory and then provided a three-set win against the Broncos after dropping the first set.

Diana Popescu

Popescu Named To All-Tournament Team

Sophomore Diana Popescu was one of six players named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday afternoon. Popescu provided a singles victory at second singles against Western Michigan and a doubles victory at first doubles against Eastern Michigan. Popescu was also up in her singles match against Eastern Michigan when play was stopped due to UB’s win.

Bulls Place Three On All-MAC Team

The Bulls placed a league-best three players on the All-MAC team, which was announced at the league’s banquet on Thursday night. Denise Harijanto was named to the first team, while Smaranda Stan and Diana Popescu were named to the second team. For Harijanto it was her third straight all-league selection and her first on the All-MAC First Team. She led the Bulls this season in singles and doubles victories. Stan was honored by the MAC for the first time and she concludes her outstanding UB career second all-time in singles victories. Popescu, who was named the MAC Freshman of the Year last year, made it on to the second team for the first time. She was second on the team in doubles victories this year and third on the team in singles wins. The Bulls return eight of their nine players next season.
