Kristen Ortman Wins MAC Tennis Honors
Ortman went 3-0 in her matches last weekend as the Bulls clinched second place with victories over Miami (Ohio) and Ball State. In Friday's contest with the RedHawks, Ortman played doubles only, pairing with junior Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect), to defeat Miami's Remy Swain and Maura Trauernicht, 8-5, to capture the opening doubles point. The doubles point proved to be the difference as the Bulls hung on for a 4-3 win over the RedHawks. Against Ball State on Saturday, Ortman made her final appearance on the home UB courts of the University Tennis Club count as she won both her doubles and singles matches. Ortman again paired with Nenova in the number two doubles slot to defeat Katie Owens and Jennifer Pollack, 8-5. Playing fourth singles, she scored the clinching fourth point in downing Owens, 6-4, 6-4 to give the Bulls their winning margin as UB downed the Cardinals, 5-2. Ortman is UB's all-time leader in both singles (59) and doubles victories (57). This season, she has put together a 19-5 singles record. The 19 singles wins are the most for Ortman in one season while her 17 doubles triumphs ties her single-season best in that category. The Bulls head into this weekend's MAC Championships with a 14-4 overall record (6-2 MAC) as the tournament's second seed, the highest ever for a UB men's or women's tennis squad. UB will face Bowling Green in Friday's quarterfinal round at 2:00 pm in Oxford, OH. |
