BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team is set to host the 2008 Mid-American Conference Tournament this upcoming weekend as the Bulls look to get revenge after two second place finishes the last two years. The tournament will run from today through Sunday at the Ellicot Tennis Center on UB’s campus. Should weather be an issue, the Village Glen Tennis Center and the Miller Tennis Center will also be used.

The Bulls enter the tournament as the sixth seed, following a 4-4 season in the MAC. UB is led by senior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) who plays number one singles for the Bulls and is part of the third doubles team. The Bulls also have freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) and junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic), who are currently tied for the team lead with 24 singles victories. The Bulls were picked as the preseason favorite in the MAC by the coaches.

Occupying the number one seed in the tournament is the Western Michigan Broncos, who have won each of the last two MAC Tournaments and this season finished the MAC undefeated. The Broncos will kick off their tournament on Friday morning as they take on the winner of this afternoon’s match between eighth-seeded Northern Illinois and the ninth seed Akron.

After a 6-1 conference season, Miami claimed the number two seed in the tournament as it will face Ball State in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. The Bulls will meet a familiar foe in third-seeded Toledo as the two teams will meet on Friday, exactly one week after UB defeated Toledo in a five-hour match, 5-2. The final match on Friday will have the fourth seed Eastern Michigan taking on Bowling Green, who claimed the number five spot.

The tournament gets underway at noon this afternoon with four more matches scheduled for Friday beginning at 10 am. Saturday’s semifinal round will also begin at 10 am, with the finals slated for Sunday afternoon at noon. All matches will be at the Ellicot Tennis Center unless matches are forced to be moved indoors due to inclement weather.
