Bulls Clinch Second Place With Weekend Sweep

The UB women’s tennis team did one better than what the Mid-American Conference coaches had expected out of the Bulls this season. The Bulls were picked to finish third in the nine-team league by the conference coaches, but a six-match MAC winning streak, including last weekend’s victories over Miami (OH) and Ball State vaulted the Bulls to second place. The seeding is the highest attained by a UB tennis team in the MAC.

Fischer Provides Spark in 4-3 Win Over RedHawks

In Friday’s win over Miami (OH) that pushed the Bulls into second place, UB picked up the fourth and clinching point off the racquet of junior Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg). Fischer sealed the victory for the Bulls with her 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Kelly Douple in the number four match. The win was just enough for the Bulls as shortly after Fischer’s clincher, the RedHawks rallied to win a pair of matches that had gone to third sets. With her 7-5, 7-5 victory over Ball State’s Emma Retter on Saturday, Fischer has won three straight matches and is now 11-3 this season.

In her final appearance before the home crowd, senior Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) did not disappoint as she scored doubles and singles victories to lead the Bulls past Ball State on Saturday and clinch second place in the MAC. Ortman teamed with Miglena Nenova to score an 8-5 second doubles win over Katie Owens and Jennifer Pollack. Ortman then gave the Bulls the all-important fourth point with her straight sets win over Owens in singles play. The singles win was Ortman’s 59th of her career while her doubles triumph was the 57th in her four years. Both marks are all-time records on UB’s victory lists.

Revenge Against the Falcons as Bulls Head into MACs

With their second-place finish, the Bulls open the MAC Championships at Oxford, OH with a return engagement against Bowling Green, seeded seventh, on Friday. The Bulls will look to gain revenge on a Falcon team that handed UB a 5-2 defeat in Bowling Green on March 25, UB’s last loss. Bowling Green gained the seventh seed after UB’s win over Ball State created a tie between the Falcons and Cardinals. Based on Ball State’s 4-3 win over Bowling Green in the regular season, the Cardinals pick up the sixth seed. Should UB get past Bowling Green, the Bulls will play one of the two teams they defeated this past weekend, Miami or Ball State, in Saturday’s semifinal round. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, April 30 at 1:00 pm with the winner gaining the automatic NCAA Championships berth.
