Women's Tennis Bounced In MAC Tourney

Bulls eliminated by Ball State, 4-0, to conclude season

YPSILANTI, MI The University at Buffalo was eliminated from the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Championship Thursday morning with a 4-0 loss to Ball State at Ypsilanti's Chippewa Club. The loss ends the Bulls' season at 6-14 overall. Ball State improved to 10-11 and moved on to face host Eastern Michigan in a quarterfinal match on Friday.

Ball State earned the doubles point two victories in the three matches. The Bulls' number two duo of Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) and Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) were defeated by Kara Sullivan and Alyce Zollman, 8-1. At number three, UB's Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) fell to Susan Kelley and Jill Wiseman, 8-2. Doubles play was stopped once Ball State clinched the point. UB's number one duo of Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) led its match against Jenny Batty and Melissa Roach, 3-2, when play was called.

UB was eliminated once Ball State won three singles matches. The Bulls were swept in the fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches ending the competition at 4-0. Zielinski was defeated by Kelley, 6-1, 6-1, at number four. Wittman fell to Zollman, 6-0, 6-2, at number five. Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) was downed by Sullivan, 6-0, 6-0, at number six.

Of the three matches that were stopped once Ball State clinched the win, Maynard trailed Roach, 6-1, 4-3, in the number one match. At number two, Ortman and Batty tied in the first set, 6-6. Ortman was trailing in the tiebreaker, 4-1, when play was halted. At number three, Kollarova trailed 6-5 in the first set to Wiseman when her match was stopped.
