Women's Tennis Weekly Release - April 24

Bulls Drop Weekend Pair

The Bulls closed out their regular season with a pair of Mid-American Conference losses at home. UB fell to Northern Illinois, 6-1, on Friday and Western Michigan, 7-0 on Saturday. Due to rainy conditions, both matches were held indoors at the Village Glen Tennis Club. UB concluded the regular season 5-15 overall and 0-9 in league play.

In UB's loss to the Huskies, the Bulls lone win was by Anne Schule (Snyder, NY/Amherst) who earned an injury default victory over Molly Opel. Senior Gloria Rodriguez (Ridge, NY/Longwood) returned to action for the Bulls after missing the entire spring season. Rodriguez fell to Ashley Brunk at number six 6-4, 6-2.

Against Western Michigan, the Bulls did not win a set dropping four matches 6-0, 6-0. Rodriguez, at number six, fell to Mindy Champion 6-1, 6-3 while top seed Michelle Mercer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Cyra Malik.

Tournament Time

Coach Kathy Twist's squad heads to the Mid-American Conference Tournament in Kalamazoo, Michigan this week. UB is seeded tenth in the tournament and will meet a familiar foe in seventh seed Northern Illinois in the first round at 2:00 pm on Thursday. The teams met in Buffalo on last Friday with NIU taking a 6-1 win. Should the Bulls dispose of the Huskies, another familiar opponent awaits in host school Western Michigan at 1:00 pm Friday. The Broncos are the number two seed in the tournament.
