Bulls Roll Past Huskies in Regular Season Finale

The University at Buffalo women's tennis team scored a 6-1 victory over visiting Northern Illinois on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Club to clinch the second seed in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Championships. The Bulls finish the regular season with a 15-2 overall record and improved to 7-1 in league play. UB has won four matches in a row and nine of the last 10 with the only loss in the string to MAC regular season champion Western Michigan on March 31.

The Bulls scored the doubles point against Northern Illinois with a sweep of the three matches. The point was sealed by the number three team of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) as they extended their winning streak to four matches with an 8-4 victory over Dora Delgadillo and Jenny Edner. The win by the UB pair also broke a six-match win streak by Delgadillo and Edner.

Back and Forth in Number Five Thriller

Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) won a marathon match over Dora Delgadillo in the number five match. Stan dropped the opening set, 6-1, but came back to win the second set, 6-0, and force the super-tiebreaker. The two then battled on several long rallies in the super-tiebreaker before Stan was able to put away Delgadillo, 14-12, to win the match. Most of the rallies during the super-tiebreaker consisted of baseline volleys between the two, resulting in constant back and forth runs. With both players thoroughly exhausted neither player scored many winners in the super-tiebreaker with most of the points claimed on unforced errors as the ball either fell into the net or was hit past the baseline. Stan did survive to claim her team-leading 21st victory of the season.

Bulls Will Look to Shake Things Up at MAC Tournament

The Bulls claim the number two seed in this week's MAC Championships in Toledo for the second consecutive season. UB will take on seventh-seeded Ball State (7-13, 2-6 MAC) at 2:00 pm on Friday in second-round action. The winner of the contest will meet the winner of the match between third-seeded Toledo (15-5, 6-2 MAC) and sixth-seeded Eastern Michigan (12-10, 4-4 MAC). Eastern Michigan was one of three-teams, along with Bowling Green and Miami (OH), to tie for fourth place with identical 4-4 league marks. The Falcons and RedHawks will square off in the four-five match on Friday. Western Michigan, who defeated the Bulls in last season’s championship match, enters the 2007 tournament as the top seed with an 8-0 MAC mark and 19-6 overall record. The Broncos will take on the winner of the eight-nine match between Northern Illinois (5-11, 1-7 MAC) and Akron (9-12, 0-8 MAC) on Friday morning.
