BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team took its fifth-straight match and established a stranglehold on second place in the Mid-American Conference with a 4-3 win over visiting Miami (OH) on Friday at the University Tennis Center. The Bulls (13-4 overall) and RedHawks (10-9) are both 5-2 in MAC play with one match remaining, however with today's win, the Bulls hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Miami.

The Bulls swept the three doubles contests to take the first point of the match. UB's number one tandem of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) defeated Katrina Lomidze and Linda Jirouskova, 8-3. The number two team of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Remy Swain and Maura Trauernicht. The UB pair trailed, 5-4, before closing the match by winning four straight games.

With the doubles point already decided, the number three match was shortened after the teams tied at 7-7. In the tiebreaker, UB's Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) and Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) scored a 7-1 win over Lesa Pesatova and Victoria Pulido to give the Bulls the sweep.

The Bulls started strong in the singles matches, winning the first set in all six contests. Novaceanu, at number one, was the first to leave the court with a victory for UB with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lomidze. Novaceanu improved to 25-5 in singles play this season, extending her record for wins in a single season. Nenova, at number two, followed shortly thereafter, downing Pesatova, 6-4, 6-1.

Miami closed the gap to 3-1 as Swain rallied to defeat Jacob in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, at the sixth spot.

Fischer, inserted into the singles lineup in place of Ortman, then sealed the victory for the Bulls with her 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Kelly Douple in the number four match. Fischer improved to 10-3 in singles action this season with the win.

After the match had been clinched, Miami closed to within 4-3 as Jirouskova, at number three, defeated Dean in third-set super-tiebreaker and Pulido downed Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) in the number five contest in a full three sets.

The Bulls host Ball State in the regular season finale on Saturday. Because of the rain and chilly temperatures expected to move through the area overnight and into the morning, the match has been moved indoors. The Bulls and Cardinals will take to the courts at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville, starting at 3:00 pm. Ortman, the lone senior on this year's UB roster, will be honored during the annual Senior Day festivities.
