Bulls Win Marathon Contest Over Toledo, 5-2

UB picks up five wins in singles play

BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team was victorious for the second straight match winning a marathon contest against Toledo, 5-2. The match lasted five hours as five of the six singles matches went into three sets. It was the first time this season that UB has claimed a MAC victory after dropping the doubles point. UB improved its record to 9-7 and 4-3 in the MAC.

The two teams played a hard-fought doubles point, which Toledo was able claim as they won the deciding match at first doubles, 9-7. The Bulls won their third doubles match as Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) defeated Sarah Horning and Jenny Belsky, 8-2.

In singles play, UB claimed five victories as all but one singles match went into three sets. Novaceanu won her match first as she quickly defeated Martina Wodzinski, 6-3, 6-3. Toledo was able to reclaim the lead in the match as Jacob fell in her contest, 3-6,6-0, 6-1 at sixth singles. The Bulls then rallied taking the next four matches. Sophomore Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) won at second singles over Ashley Frey, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 and then Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) gave UB a 3-2 lead with a 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2 win over Nadia Zaubareva at fifth singles. The Bulls held that advantage as the final two matches went back-and-forth with both teams fighting hard. Junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) was able to clinch the match for the Bulls as she defeated Jenny Belsky at fourth singles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) wrapped up the win for the Bulls with a victory at third singles over Maha Guirguis, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2).

The Bulls will wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon as they host Eastern Michigan at the University Tennis Courts beginning at 1:00 pm. Following that match UB will get ready to host the 2008 MAC Championships.
