UB Women's Tennis Falls to Ball State

Kristen Ortman picks up singles victory for Bulls

MUNCIE, IN The University at Buffalo women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision Friday afternoon to Ball State at Muncie's Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. The Bulls fall to 6-12 overall and 0-8 in the Mid-American Conference. Ball State improved to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in league action.

UB's lone victory of the match was secured at second singles by freshman Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst). Ortman rolled to straight sets victory over BSU's Jenny Batty, 6-3, 6-4. With the victory, Ortman raised her singles record to 12-9, including a 4-4 mark against MAC opponents. She has also won three of her last four matches, all against MAC opposition.

The remainder of the matches were taken in straight sets by Ball State. UB's Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) was defeated by Melissa Roach, 6-1, 6-1, at number one. At number three, Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) fell 6-4, 6-2 to Jill Wieman. Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) lost, 6-0, 6-1, to Susan Kelley at number four. At number five, Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Alyce Zollman. Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) was defeated, 6-0, 6-0, by Kara Sullivan at number six.

The Bulls were also swept in doubles play to begin the match. Maynard and Ortman were defeated by Batty and Roach, 8-5, at number one. Kollarova and Zielinski, at number two, fell to Zollman and Sullivan, 8-2. UB's third doubles team of Wittman and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) lost to Wieman and Kelley, 8-1.

The Bulls end the regular season tomorrow at Bowling Green. Match time is 1 pm. The Mid-American Conference Championships are slated to begin April 24 at Eastern Michigan.
