Bulls Sweep Toledo, EMU to Move into Second

The women's tennis team finished its final roadtrip of the regular season with a pair of wins to move into second place in the Mid-American Conference standings as the league tournament is now less than two weeks away. UB scored a 4-3 victory over Toledo Friday afternoon to knock the Rockets from the ranks of the unbeaten in league play. On Saturday, UB used an augmented lineup to down Eastern Michigan, 5-2. UB is now 14-2 overall and 6-1 in MAC competition. Western Michigan, the only team to have defeated UB in league play this season, stands alone at the top of league standings with a 6-0 mark.

Senior Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) went undefeated in her four singles and doubles matches over the weekend as the Bulls downed Toledo and Eastern Michigan. Fischer and doubles partner Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) scored 8-4 victories in the number three matches against their Toledo and EMU opponents. In singles play, Fischer, at number six, won both her matches in straight sets with 7-5 scores in the final set against Toledo’s Jessica Azoulay and EMU’s Laura Fernandez. Fischer improved her singles record to 16-4 this season, currently riding a seven-match winning streak and remained undefeated in MAC competition at 5-0. She is also 12-6 in doubles play and has won three straight with Jacob in the number three slot.

In UB’s victory over Eastern Michigan, junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorge, Romania/Economic) scored her 20th singles win of the season to lead the Bulls in the category. Stan, playing at number four, after the Bulls were forced to juggle the lineup on Saturday due to the absence of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita), defeated EMU’s Tina Bestehorn in three sets. After dropping the opening set, Stan recovered to take the second set, 7-5, and then turned on the afterburners to shut out Bestehorn in the deciding set, 6-0. Stan was denied her chance of win number 20 the day before as she fell in the number five match to Toledo’s Jenny Belsky, 6-3, 6-4. Stan is 20-6 in singles play this season while freshman Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) is one victory away from the plateau with her 19-7 mark.

Huskies Come Calling in Home Finale

UB hosts Northern Illinois in the final contest of the regular season on Friday afternoon, starting at 1:00 pm. The match will serve as the final home appearance for seniors Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect), Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) and Katrin Fischer. The Huskies are 4-10 overall and 0-6 in Mid-American Conference play this season and are coming off a 5-2 loss at home to Ball State on Saturday. NIU captured the doubles point against the Cardinals as the number three duo Dora Delgadillo and Jenny Edner won their sixth consecutive match. The Bulls have won the last two meetings with the Huskies in the all-time series, including last year’s 6-1 win in DeKalb.
