Women's Tennis Falls at Miami, 5-2

Andreea Novaceanu and Miglena Nenova pick up singles wins for Bulls

OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team finished a weekend roadtrip with a 5-2 loss at Miami (OH) on Saturday afternoon at the Hepburn Varsity Courts. The Bulls are now 7-6 overall and 3-5 in Mid-American Conference play while the RedHawks improve to 14-6, 5-2 MAC.

UB picked up a victory in the opening doubles competition, but was unable to clinch a second win to take the point. The lone UB win came at number two as Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) combined to down Leda Pesatova and Kelly Douple, 8-4. Miami took the point with wins at numbers one and three. At number one, UB's Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) dropped an 8-6 decision to Linda Jirouskova and Katrina Lomidze. UB's third doubles team of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Sabrina Carmona (Sao Paulo, Brazil/MMDC) fell to Victoria Pulido and Remy Swain, 8-3.

The Bulls won the top two singles matches by identical scores. Novaceanu rolled past Jirouskova by a 6-2, 6-2 margin in the number one match. At number two, Nenova also posted a 6-2, 6-2 win as she topped Lomidze.

UB dropped tough three-set matches at third and fourth singles. Ortman won the first set of the number three match against Douple, 6-2, but lost the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0. At number four, Fischer picked up an opening set win over Pesatova, 6-3. Pesatova then rallied to win the second set, 6-3 and the deciding set by a 6-0 score.

Carmona, playing fifth singles, fell to Pulido, 6-1, 6-0 and Jacob, at the sixth spot, lost to Swain, 6-3, 6-1.

The Bulls conclude the regular season on Friday, April 22 at Akron.
