HUNTINGTON, WV – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team opened the weekend road swing with a 7-0 loss to Mid-American Conference rival Marshall, ranked 67th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. The Bulls fall to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in league play while the Thundering Herd improved to 13-7 overall and 5-1 in the MAC. It was also the sixth straight 7-0 victory for Marshall this season.

The Bulls opened the match with losses in all three doubles contests. UB’s top tandem of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) played well against the country’s 60th-ranked duo, Danielle Hock and Joelle Good, but fell by an 8-4 count. UB’s number two team of Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) and Sabrina Carmona (Sao Paulo, Brazil/MMDC) fell to Ashley Kroh and Jeanne Schwartz, 8-0. The number three team of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) lost to Lille Nzudie and Shannon Brown, 8-1.

UB picked up just one set in the six singles matches. Novaceanu, playing first singles, scored a 6-3 win in the opening set against Kroh. However, Kroh then took the next two sets, 6-0, 6-2.

The remainder of the Bulls were swept in straight sets by a stronger Marshall squad. Nenova dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Nzudie at number two. Good downed Ortman, 6-3, 7-5 at number three. At number four, Fischer fell to Hock, 6-1, 6-0. UB’s Jamie Jackson (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy), playing fifth singles lost to Schwartz, 6-0, 6-0 while Jacob, at the sixth spot fell to Brown, 6-3, 6-0.

The Bulls look to rebound tomorrow at Miami (OH) starting at 1:00 pm.
