Bulls Split Pair Of 4-3 Decision This Weekend

The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team hit an emotional roller coaster this past weekend as the Bulls went 1-1 on the weekend, with both matches finishing at 4-3. UB defeated Western Michigan on Friday afternoon in a rematch of last year’s MAC Championship match. With things tied at 3-3, the match came down to sixth singles. On Saturday, UB’s match with Bowling Green also came down to sixth singles with the Falcons emerging victorious 4-3.

Harijanto Dominates Singles Play

Playing against two of the top rated players in the conference, junior Denise Harijanto made quick work of her first singles opponents this past weekend. On Friday, Harijanto defeated the two-time defending MAC Player of the Year, Kerstin Pahl, 7-6 (4), 6-4 and then on Saturday she defeated Bowling Green’s Kelsey Jakupcin, 6-0, 6-1. Harijanto leads the team in singles victories with a 21-4 record. The 21 wins tie her career high, which she reached in each of her first two seasons. She was equally as dominant in doubles as she rejoined teammate Diana Popescu on Saturday as the duo combined for their ninth straight win.

Subenkova Leads Bulls Past Broncos

The Bulls used a solid performance from junior Anna Subenkova on Friday afternoon as she broke a 3-3 tie at sixth singles to lead the Bulls to victory against Western Michigan. After winning the first set 6-3 against Rachel Denny, Subenkova dropped a tight second set 7-2 in a tiebreaker. However, Subenkova fought back in the third and deciding set as she won 6-3 to give UB the victory, its second straight 4-3 win over Western Michigan.

Bulls Wrap Up Regular Season

The Bulls will wrap up their regular season on Saturday afternoon as they host Akron at 1:00 pm. UB will then get ready for the 2009 MAC Championships the following week at Bowling Green. Akron is currently having one of its best seasons in program history with a 15-6 record and a 4-2 mark in conference play.
