Bulls Notch Shutout Over Akron, 7-0

UB picks up a win in every individual match

AKRON, OH- The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team snapped a three-match losing skid with a convincing 7-0 win against Akron on Friday afternoon. The Bulls were able to win all three doubles matches and every contest in singles play to improve their record to 8-7 on the year and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference.

In doubles play, the first doubles squad of Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) remained undefeated in the MAC as they defeated Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Carolina Castro Cota, 8-2. The second doubles team of Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) and Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and the third doubles team of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) each won matches by identical 8-4 scores.

In singles play, the Bulls won all six of their matches in straight sets with no Akron player winning more than four games in any set. Novaceanu defeated Gombera, 6-2, 6-3 at first singles, while Harijanto moved back up to second singles and defeated Castro Cota, 6-4, 6-4. Popescu and Stan both picked up wins as they continue to lead the team in victories as they both have 22 singles wins. Popescu defeated Berry, 6-1, 6-3 and Stan won her match against Benjamin, 6-4, 6-1. Toia took the win at fifth singles against Carlson, 6-1, 6-3 and Jacob won her match at sixth singles against Langworthy, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Anna Subenkova (Riga, Latvia) won her exhibition match against Laura Hemlepp, 8-2.

The match served as UB’s final road contest as they wrap up the regular season at home next weekend before hosting the 2008 MAC Championships on April 24-27. The Bulls next home match is Friday, April 18 against Toledo at 1:00 pm.
