AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 7-0 shutout victory over Akron in Mid-American Conference action at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Bulls are now 11-4 overall and 3-2 in MAC play while the Zips fall to 4-13 and 0-4 in the MAC. The Bulls also moved into a third-place tie with Eastern Michigan and Toledo, the two teams they defeated last weekend, in the MAC standings.

The Bulls controlled the match from start to finish, scoring the opening doubles point. The number one tandem of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) knocked off Tanya Gombera and Jenna Larson, 8-2. At number two, UB's Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) downed Amy Sherlock and Alyssa Carlson, 8-6. The number three team of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) had little trouble as they disposed of Jennifer Ales and Laura Hemlepp by an 8-2 count.

UB also swept the singles contests, winning all six in straight sets. Novaceanu, playing in the number one slot, rolled past Gombera, 6-0, 6-2. The victory was Novaceanu's 11th straight singles win this season and extended her overall record to 24-4. Novaceanu was also named the MAC's Player of the Week earlier in the day after posting straight set wins over her opponents from Eastern Michigan and Toledo last weekend.

Ortman scored a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lindsey Berry in the number four match. Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) scored a "double-bagel" victory over Hemlepp, 6-0, 6-0, in the number five match. Jacob rounded out the UB sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Ales at number six.

In an eight-game pro-set exhibition match, Fischer defeated Carlson, 8-5.

The Bulls travel to Northern Illinois Saturday for a 1:00 pm match.
