Weekend Sweep Evens MAC Record

The Bulls swept their home matches over the weekend to move to 10-4 overall and even their Mid-American Conference mark to 2-2. UB knocked off Eastern Michigan, 5-2, on Friday and then rallied to take all six singles matches in a 6-1 victory over Toldeo on Saturday. The two victories vaulted the Bulls from a seventh-place tie to fifth place in the league standings.

In Friday’s match against Eastern Michigan, the Bulls clinched the opening doubles point in dramatic fashion. The number one team of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) rallied to win a 7-5 tiebreaker over Vanessa Frankowski and Yana Parfenyuk and take the contest 9-8. UB trailed the tiebreaker, 4-2, at the changeover before coming back to take five of the next six points. The Bulls had led the match, 6-0, before EMU picked up steam to force the breaker.

Singles Sweep of Rockets

The Bulls needed some strong singles play on Saturday to defeat Toledo after failing to gain the opening doubles point. The six singles players in the lineup did not disappoint as they swept through their Rocket opponents in all six matches. Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) clinched the all-important fourth point with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Sarah VanderMolen in the number six spot. Junior Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) returned to the lineup and won an exciting super-tiebreaker match over Jenny Belsky to complete the sweep. In a match that lasted three and a half hours, Fischer rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the super-tiebreaker to defeat Belsky, 10-6, and take the match.

Ten in a Row For Novaceanu

Sophomore Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) moved back into the number one slot on the singles ladder for the weekend matches against Eastern Michigan and Toledo and remained true to form. Novaceanu won both matches, scoring 7-5 second-set victories in both contests to clinch the two wins. Novaceanu, who earlier in the season broke her own single-season victories mark in singles play, has now won 10 straight singles contests and is currently 13-1 in dual-meet competition.

As Tina Goes, So Go the Bulls

To gain an idea of how the Bulls are going to fare in a head-to-head match, one needs only to see how Jacob does in her individual contest in the sixth singles slot. Jacob has compiled a 10-4 record in dual meet play, the exact same record as the Bulls won-loss record. So far this season, when Jacob wins her match, the Bulls finish on top, however if Jacob comes off the court with a loss, UB drops the overall contest.
