Bulls Take Three Singles Matches Against Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, OH- The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team began its three-match road trip on the short end of a 4-3 decision Friday afternoon against the Bowling Green Falcons. Each team picked up three victories in singles play, but BGSU was able to claim the doubles point. The Bulls are now 7-6 on the season and 2-2 in the MAC.

The Bulls picked up a win at first doubles where Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) defeated Christine Chiricosta and Kelsey Jakupcin, 9-7. Harijanto and Popescu have won each of their four MAC matches this season.

In singles play the Bulls won three matches beginning at first singles as Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) defeated Kelsey Jakupcin in three sets, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2. Popescu won her team-leading 21st match of the season at second singles as she defeated Christine Chiricosta, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3. Junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) joined the 20-win plateau in singles action as she won at fourth singles over Samantha Kintzel, 6-1, 6-1.

The Bulls are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to two-time defending conference champion Western Michigan. The match with the Broncos begins at 1:00 pm.
