Bulls Stumble Against RedHawks, 5-2

Nenova and Ortman record singles and doubles victories for UB women's tennis

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Mid-American Conference rival Miami (OH) on Saturday at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville. The Bulls are now 7-8 overall and 0-6 in the MAC while the RedHawks are now 10-9 overall,3-2 MAC.

UB's number one doubles team of Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) took an 8-6 win over Katrina Lomidze and Linda Jirouskova. UB led 4-1 and 6-3 in the pro-set match before Miami forged a 6-6 tie. Nenova and Ortman then were able to put away their opponents by winning the final two games for the 8-6 win.

Miami claimed the doubles point by winning the second and third matches. At number two, Miami's Megan Zimpfer and Remy Swain defeated Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), 8-2. At number three, the UB duo of Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) fell to Nancy Wiegand and Maura Trauernicht, 8-0.

Nenova and Ortman, playing the top two singles spots for UB posted individual victories for the Bulls' lone points. At number one, Nenova rolled past Lomidze, 6-4, 6-1. Ortman had little trouble downing Jirouskova, 6-2, 6-1, at number two.

The remainder of the matches went to Miami. At number three, Zimpfer defeated Fischer, 6-1, 6-1. At number four, Wiegand downed Wittman, 6-0, 6-0. At number five, UB's Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) lost to Swain, 6-0, 6-0. At number six, Zielinski fell to Trauernicht, 6-0, 6-0.

The Bulls play their final home match of the season on Friday, April 9 when they host Akron at 1:00 pm. If the weather permits, the match will be played outdoors at the UB Tennis Center.
