Bulls Win Outdoors, Lose Indoors in MAC Home Weekend
The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team played one Mid-American Conference match outdoors and one MAC match indoors over the weekend, splitting the two contests. On the University Tennis Club courts on Friday, the Bulls rallied to defeat Bowling Green, 4-3, after spotting the Falcons the opening doubles point. However, Friday’s sunny skies turned cloudy and chilly on Saturday and forced the Bulls and Western Michigan indoors for the renewal of their rivalry. The Bulls saw their five-match win streak stopped at the Village Glen Tennis Center as UB fell to the Broncos, ranked 62nd in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, 6-1. UB is now 11-2 overall and 3-1 in MAC play.
Don’t Cry for Me Buffalo
Katrin Fischer | Although Saturday’s match against Western Michigan turned into a loss for the Bulls, UB came away with something that no other team in the MAC had done this season, score a victory in a match against the Broncos. Western Michigan had come into Buffalo on Saturday with 12 singles wins and six doubles conquests in their two league matches thus far. That all changed as Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) claimed the number one doubles match with an 8-6 win over Ashley Moccia and Norika Saruta. The UB tandem jumped out to 3-0 and 5-2 leads before WMU rallied to take a 6-5 lead, but the Bulls won the next three games for the 8-6 win, although WMU had already clinched the doubles point. Western Michigan’s singles streak also fell by the wayside as Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) scored a 6-3, 6-3 win over Emily Dudzik in the number six match.
Nenova Earns MAC Honors
Miglena Nenova | With her singles and doubles sweep against opponents from Ball State and Miami (OH), senior Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) was named the Mid-American Conference’s Player of the Week on March 28. It was the second time this season that Nenova had been tabbed by the league as its top performer. Nenova is tied with Denise Harijanto for UB’s top doubles record this season at 19-6 (The two combined for a 14-5 record before head coach Kathy Twist juggled the doubles pairings). Nenova is 15-4 in singles play this season and is the school’s all-time leader with 65. She scored her 70th doubles victory of her career, another UB record, on Friday as she paired with Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) to defeat Bowling Green’s Katia Babina and Andrea Volle, 8-4.
Zips Coming Into Town on Friday
The Bulls play just one match this coming weekend as they entertain the Akron Zips on Friday, April 6 at 1:00 pm. Akron fell to 9-8 and 0-4 in the MAC with its 6-1 loss to Bowling Green on Saturday. With a forecast of chilly temperatures and a possible mixture of rain and snow, expect the contest to be moved indoors to the Village Glen Tennis Center.
