Women's Tennis Falls Twice In Weekend MAC MatchesBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis program continued its early-season slump with a pair of Mid-American Conference losses. Over the weekend, the Bulls dropped two 7-0 losses to Miami (Ohio) and Marshall. The Bulls are now 2-11 on the season and 0-4 in MAC matches. In both matches, the Bulls' opponent swept the singles and doubles competition. On Friday, against the RedHawks, UB dropped the first and second doubles matches by scores of 8-1. The first-doubles duo of sophomore Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and junior Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) lost to Ivona Grujic and Janet Baker. Junior Anne Schule (Snyder, NY/Amherst) and freshman Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) lost to Kadya Richards and Ihze Meyer at second doubles. Juniors Kendra Pyke (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and Jennifer Wong (Penfield, NY/Penfield) dropped their third doubles match, 8-0, to Catherine Dilley and Erica Echko. The RedHawks proceeded to win each of the singles matches, not allowing UB players to win more than one game in any set. "We have been playing some tough nationally-ranked opponents," said head coach Kathy Twist. "Our overall play is improving on a week-by-week basis and the score is not an indicator of how the team has been playing as of late." Against Marshall, the Bulls experienced more of the same. The Thundering Herd also swept the singles and doubles matches. Junior Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons) lost 6-3, 6-0 to Jessie Watkins at sixth singles. UB's next competition is Friday, April 6, against Akron. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at
the UB Tennis Center. If there is bad weather, the match will be moved indoors to the Vilage Glen
Tennis Facilities. |
