Bulls Fall to Tampa

Women's Tennis Travels to Warmer Climate for Spring Break Matches

TAMPA, FL - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team began competition in its 2002 spring season on Friday with a 7-0 loss to the University of Tampa.

In doubles competition, junior Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and senior Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) fell at the number one spot to Liz Moulthrop and Jenny LaRue, 8-4. At second doubles, Kendra Pyke (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and Anne Schule (Snyder, NY/Amherst) fell to Jamie Fox and Jen Brown, 8-2. Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Jennifer Wong (Penfield, NY/Penfield) were defeated at third doubles by Lena Makurath and Christine Krivac, 8-5.

The Bulls were forced to make some lineup changes after Maynard was scratched from the singles competition due to injury. Second singles player Michaela Kollarova also sat out the match due to illness. At first singles, Amarasinghe fell to Moulthrop, 6-2, 6-1. Wong lost a close second singles match to LaRue, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. At third singles, freshman Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) fell to Fox, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons) fell to Abby Shelide at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4. At fifth singles, Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) fell to Brown, 6-4, 6-0. Schule fell to Makurath at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-1.

The Bulls continue competition in the spring season against Western Michigan at the Village Glen Tennis Club this Friday at 1 pm in Williamsville, NY.
