ORLANDO, FL - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team continued competition in its 2002 spring season on Wednesday with a 6-1 loss to Portland State.

At first singles, junior Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) fell to Katie Slizewski, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Michaela Kollarova (Slovak Republic/Bratislava) fell at second singles to Blaze Wadum, 6-4, 6-0. At third singles, senior Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) fell to Melinda Johnson, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Jennifer Wong (Penfield, NY/Penfield) took Buffalo's only singles victory, defeating Holly Meldahl at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-2. Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) fell at fifth singles to Karolina Puk, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. At sixth singles, senior Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons) was defeated by Abby Schagunn, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles competition, Maynard and Amarasinghe fell to Slizewski and Johnson at number one, 8-3. Wong and Kollarova took the second doubles victory over Wadum and Puk, 8-1. At third doubles, Kendra Pyke (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and Anne Schule (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central) fell to Schagunn and Meldahl, 8-0.

The Bulls are next in action against Western Michigan at the Village Glen Tennis Club on Friday at 1 pm in Williamsville, NY.
