Women's Tennis Weekly Release April 1

Bulls Netters Drop Weekend Pair

The Bulls suffered a pair of Mid-American Conference losses Friday and Saturday in women's tennis action. UB is now 5-10 overall and 0-4 in league contests.

On Friday Ball State defeated the Bulls 7-0 the University Tennis Club.

UB was buoyed by the play of sophomores Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) and Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Speckenkill) in the most competitive contests of the afternoon. Amarasinghe, playing at number five singles, held her own before falling to Shelly Brizendine 6-4, 6-2. At number three, Maynard took three first set games from Darcy Poulos but lost her match 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Michelle Mercer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) also took a pair of first set games from Gena Tranquada at number one but fell 6-2, 6-0.

Saturday, Bowling Green dealt UB another 7-0 loss at the University Tennis Club on a breezy afternoon that saw many shots on both sides of the net knocked down by the gusty winds.

The Bulls played a much better match but were overwhelmed by an experienced Falcon team that included six juniors and seniors in the singles lineup. UB's played today's match with two freshmen and four sophomores.

Sophomores Kris Van Schoonhoven (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Amarasinghe were the Bulls' top players on Saturday. Van Schoonhoven, at number four, dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to junior Tracy Howitt while Amarasinghe was defeated by an identical 6-1, 6-2 score by senior Beth Wilson at number five. Van Schoonhoven also paired with Mercer in the exciting second doubles match, an 8-5 loss to Kelly Dredge and Devon Bissinger. Bowling Green improved to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in league play.

UB head coach Kathy Twist was happier with her squad's performance on Saturday than Friday vs. Ball State. "It was much better today than yesterday. The points went longer, our team hung in there. We played better today against a better team."

The Bulls continue their MAC schedule next week with matches at Miami on April 7 and Marshall April 8. Both matches begin at 1:00 pm.
