The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team kept its winning streak alive, picking up its ninth straight win this past Saturday afternoon. The Bulls defeated Northern Illinois, 6-1, at the Village Glen Tennis Center. The 3-0 start in the MAC is UB’s second all-time and their first since 2006-07.

UB’s top two players had nearly flawless performances against Northern Illinois as they swept doubles competition and dropped no more than three games in singles play. Junior Denise Harijanto and sophomore Diana Popescu combined for an 8-0 shutout at first doubles and then continued their dominance in singles play. Harijanto played at first singles and dispatched her opponent, 6-0, 6-2, while Popescu was just as impressive in the first set, defeating her NIU opponent, 6-0, 6-3. The two are tied for the team lead with 17 doubles victories and individually, Harijanto is already closing in on the 20-win mark with 18 singles victories.

Rest Of The Squad Not Too Shabby Either

Also winning both singles and doubles on Saturday was junior Anna Subenkova and senior Smaranda Stan. The two combined at third doubles for an 8-3 win which was instrumental in UB claiming the doubles point against the Huskies. In singles action, Stan defeated her opponent at third singles in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, while Subenkova put on quite a show for the fans at sixth singles. Constantly fighting back throughout the match, Subenkova won a hard fought 7-5, 7-6 (4) decision to seal the 6-1 victory for UB. At fifth singles, sophomore Aleksandra Petrova chipped in with an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory. Petrova has now won all three of her MAC matches this season.

Bulls Hit The Road One More Time

The Bulls will embark on one final regular season road trip this upcoming weekend as they head to Miami (OH) on Friday and Ball State on Saturday.
