UB Women's Tennis Drops Decision at Miami

Freshman Kristen Ortman records lone UB victory in 6-1 loss to RedHawks

HAMILTON, OH - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Miami University on Friday in Mid-American Conference action at the Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton, OH. The Bulls fall to 6-7 and 0-3 in the league while the RedHawks improve to 6-8 and 1-1 in the MAC.

Miami gained the match's doubles point to begin the day as they swept past the Bulls in all three matches. UB's Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) fell 8-3 to Megan Zimpfer and Remy Swain at number one. At number two, Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) and Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) fell 8-3 to Nancy Wiegand and Ilze Meyer. The number three squad of Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) were defeated 8-0 by Grace Cascarilla and Maura Trauernicht.

UB gained one victory in singles play. Ortman, playing number two singles, knocked off Casacarilla in a tiebreaker, for the lone UB point. Ortman won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second, 6-3, to force the ten-point tiebreaker. Ortman then took the match by winning the tiebreaker by a 10-7 margin.

The remainder of UB's singles players dropped their matches. Maynard fell to Zimpfer, 6-1, 6-2, at number one. Kollarova was defeated, 6-1, 6-1, by Wiegand at number three. At number four, Zielinski dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Swain. Wittman fell, 6-0, 6-1, to Meyer at number five. Number six Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) lost 6-0, 6-0 to Trauernicht.

UB continues its two-match league road swing on Saturday at Marshall.
