BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team opened the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule with a decisive 6-1 victory over Toledo Friday afternoon at the Village Glen Tennis Club in Williamsville, NY. The Bulls are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in MAC play while the Rockets are 8-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.

UB secured the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. At number one, the UB duo of Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) rolled past Viviana Rivero and Sarah Horning, 8-2. The number three team of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Sabrina Carmona (Sao Paulo, Brazil/MMDC) clinched the point with an 8-3 win over Sarah Thompson and Ashley Carmack. Toledo took the number two match as Myriam Cueva and Sarah VanderMolen defeated UB's Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC), 8-5.

The Bulls took five of the six singles matches, dropping just the number one match as Cueva downed Nenova, 6-0, 6-1. The remainder of the matches fell in UB's favor with three contests in straight sets. Novaceanu improved her singles mark to 15-1 and kept her dual meet record perfect at 5-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Rivero. Ortman knocked off Moran, 6-1, 6-3, at number three and Jacob downed Thompson, 6-1, 6-0, in the number six match.

The fourth and fifth singles contests went down to the wire with the Bulls taking super-tiebreakers in both matches. Fischer, at number four, defeated Horning 10-4 in the super-tiebreaker after splitting the opening sets, 6-4 and 0-6. Carmona, at number five, remained perfect since joining the team in the second semester, downing VanderMolen 10-5 in the super-tiebreaker after rallying to force the extra play with a 6-4 win in the second set. VanderMolen took the first set by a 6-1 score.

UB hosts Eastern Michigan in a MAC match on Saturday at the Village Glen Tennis Club. The Bulls and Eagles will hit the court at 3:00 pm, followed by the UB men taking on Toledo at 6:00 pm.
