MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team scored a 6-1 victory over Ball State on Friday in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. The match was played indoors at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center due to rain throughout the day in Indiana.

The Bulls (9-1, 1-0 MAC) took two of three doubles matches from the Cardinals (5-7, 0-1 MAC) to open play. UB's top tandem of Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) scored an 8-2 win over Haly Calderwood and Sophie Quist. The Bulls clinched the point in the number two match as Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) knocked off Jennifer Pollack and Christine Stromberg, 8-4.

UB won five of six singles matches to pick up the victory, all in straight sets. Nenova defeated Quist, 6-1, 6-3, in the number one match. Harijanto, at number two, downed Calderwood, 6-1, 6-2. Novaceanu breezed past Pollack, in the number three match, 6-3, 6-0. At number five, Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) downed Emma Retter, 6-1, 7-5. Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) beat Katherine Rist, 6-2, 6-2, in the number six match.
