TAMPA, FL – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team completed its three-match spring break trip with a 5-2 win over Dayton. With the victory the Bulls improve to 7-4 including a perfect 3-0 record in Florida.

Dayton won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead on the Bulls. UB took the top doubles match as the team of Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) defeated Dayton’s Erin Kirkland and Courtney McDowell, 8-2. Dayton took the number two and three matches. Michelle Carroll and Kara Metzger defeated UB’s Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), 8-5, at number two. At number three, Dayton’s Katie Donovan and Kate Mellion downed UB’s Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) and Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg), 8-6.

The Bulls rallied to win the match with five of six singles victories taking all but the number five match. At number one, Nenova went to a pair of tiebreakers in her match against Kirkland to keep her dual-meet unbeaten streak alive. Nenova dropped the first set in a 7-1 tiebreaker. She then forced a second set tiebreaker, defeating Kirkland, 8-6, in the tiebreaker and knotting the match at a set apiece. In the deciding third set, Nenova rolled to a 6-3 win to take the match and raise her dual-meet record to 11-0, including a 7-0 mark at first singles.

In other action, Ortman downed McDowell, 6-0, 6-4, at number two. Fischer defeated Carroll, 6-4, 6-3, at number three. Wittman knocked off Donovan in three sets, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, at number four. At number six, Onessa Williams (Albany, NY/Albany/Mohawk Valley CC) defeated Sarah Miller, 7-5, 6-3. The lone singles loss for the Bulls was Kollarova, at number five, falling to Metzger, 7-5, 6-2.

The Bulls return to Mid-American Conference action with matches at Northern Illinois and Western Michigan next weekend.
