Bulls Defeat Robert Morris 4-3

Doubles victories key to win over Colonials

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo won a pair of doubles matches to pick up the team point that proved to be the margin of victory as the Bulls defeated visiting Robert Morris 4-3 in women's tennis action at the Village Glen Tennis Club Saturday afternoon.

The number two doubles combination of Michelle Mercer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Kris Von Schoonhoven (Lockport, NY/Lockport) defeated RMC's Dani Tremba and Laura Roberts 8-3. UB's Jen Wong (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) downed Amanda Chabonek and Wendi Swanson 9-7 at number three to sew up the point for the Bulls.

In singles action, Von Schoonhoven defeated Chabonek 6-4, 6-2 at number four. Other singles winners for the Bulls included Nicole Sargent (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) at number two, a 6-2, 6-2 victor over Tremba and Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Speckenkill) who "double-bageled" Christine O'Connor 6-0, 6-0 at number three.

"We won ugly," said Bulls coach Kathy Twist, "but we were able to pull out the win."

The Bulls improved their season record to 5-5 and now head into the Mid-American Conference portion of their schedule with nine of the next ten against conference opposition. The Bulls travel to Eastern Michigan and Toledo next weekend.

"We're going to work on a lot of aspects of our game," said Twist. "This match was a learning experience. We're going to need to step up our game against the MAC teams."
