Bulls Complete Spring Break Trip The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team finished their three-match Spring Break trip with a 1-2 record facing some of the nation’s top competition. The Bulls started the trip off with a 4-3 loss to Nova Southeastern, the ninth ranked team in Division II. After an easy 7-0 victory over Youngstown State, UB then met South Florida, who was ranked 44th in the nation, where it lost 7-0. Popescu And Stan Continue To Lead Junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) and freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) continue to lead the team in singles play as Popescu has 18 wins on the season, while Stan has 17 in singles action. Both players won two of their three singles matches while in Florida for Spring Break. Against Nova Southeastern, Stan defeated Ande Johnson, 6-0, 6-0 and against Youngstown State, she defeated Emily Thayer, 6-2, 6-1. Against South Florida, Stan was one of two UB players to take their singles match into three sets. Popescu was equally impressive on the trip. Against Nova Southeastern she defeated Alexandra Korotkevich, the 40th ranked player in the nation in Division II, 6-4, 6-3. Against the Penguins, Popescu defeated Tanisha Welch, 6-4, 6-1.
Bulls Continue To Move Up The Record Books Senior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita), who is already UB’s career leader in singles victories is now up to 76 wins for her career. Stan now has 47 career singles victories, which ties her for fifth place, while Popescu’s 18 victories in her freshman season already have placed her 17th all-time. Up Next The Bulls begin Mid-American Conference play this weekend as they travel to Northern Illinois on Friday for a 2:00 pm match. The Bulls were picked to finish first in the MAC this season and will be hosting the MAC Championships after the completion of the eight-match conference season.
