The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team won all three of its matches this past week during its Spring Break competition and have now won six straight matches. The Bulls defeated Barry University, 9-0, and Southern Illinois, 4-3. UB finished its trip with a 7-2 victory over Nova Southeastern, avenging last year’s loss. Popescu Goes 6-0 On The Week Sophomore Diana Popescu won all six of her matches this past week in Florida. She claimed three doubles victories from the number one spot and then claimed three victories from the number two singles spot. Against Barry, Popescu won her doubles match, 8-5, and then won her singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Against Southern Illinois, Popescu claimed an 8-4 victory in doubles, while again winning singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. To conclude the trip Popescu won her doubles match against Nova Southeastern, 8-3, and then won her singles match in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Barry and Nova Southeastern are both ranked in the top 20 in the nation in Division II. Popescu is now 10-6 in singles play and 14-6 in doubles action.
Junior Denise Harijanto went 5-1 on the week, winning all three of her matches at first doubles and then going 2-1 in singles play at first singles.In doubles play, Harijanto combined with Popescu, while in singles she won her matches against Barry and Nova Southeastern, but fell in a tightly contested match against Southern Illinois, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2). Harijanto leads the team in singles victories and is tied with Popescu with their 14 doubles wins. Bulls Begin Conference Play The Bulls have concluded non-conference play and their final eight matches will all be against Mid-American Conference opponents. The Bulls begin defense of their MAC Title this weekend at Eastern Michigan and Toledo. UB will face the Eagles on Friday and the Rockets on Saturday.
