TAMPA, FL – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team opened its spring break trip to Florida with a 6-3 victory over Hillsborough Community College in Tampa on Monday night. The Bulls improve to 7-1 while the Hawks, one of the top junior college programs in the country, are 14-4. This was the first match this season in which Hillsborough faced an NCAA Division I team.

In doubles play, UB picked up two victories in the three matches. At number two, UB's Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) defeated Alba Passanisi and Mizuho Nishimura, 8-3. The number three team of Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) shut out Chelsea Best and Courtney Bogart, 8-0.

UB's number one tandem of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Natalie Dean (Feliding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) fell 9-7 to Hillsborough's Hiroko Nishikawa and Amanda Yogus.

The Bulls clinched the match with four victories in singles play, all with straight-sets wins. Ortman knocked off Nishimura, 6-4, 6-2, at number two. At number three, Novaceanu rolled past Passanisi, 6-0, 6-1. Stan defeated Best, 6-1, 6-1, in the number five match. Jacob had no problem in the number six match as she cruised past Ginifer Hartman, 6-0, 6-1.
