Bulls Shut Out UW-Green Bay, 7-0

Women's tennis team opens Florida trip with whitewashing over the Phoenix

TAMPA, FL - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team opened a three-match trip to Florida with a 7-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to snap a four-match losing streak. The Bulls improved to 5-4 with the win while the Phoenix fell to 5-6 and stopped a modest two-match win streak. It the second victory over a Horizon League member this season as the Bulls also defeated Cleveland State last fall.

UB won the doubles point by claiming the top two matches. At number one, the team of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) defeated Alexis Watson and Heather Harding, 8-1. The number two team of Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) downed Amanda Dworak and Amy Meissner, 8-5. The lone blemish on the day was a loss by the number three doubles team of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) to Amber Murdoch and Kristin Leeder, 8-2.

The Bulls rolled in the singles matches, winning all six in straight sets. At number one, Nenova defeated Watson, 6-3, 6-2. Ortman, at number two, had little trouble with Harding, winning 6-1, 6-0. At number three, Fischer downed Murdoch, 7-5, 6-3. Wittman disposed of Dworak, 6-1, 6-4, at number four. At number five, Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) saw her first action of the spring season, defeating Leeder, 6-2. 6-4. Zielinski rounded out the shutout with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Meissner at number six.

UB meets Division II member Tampa on Wednesday, March 17. They wrap up the trip with a match against Dayton on Friday, March 19.
