Bulls Sweep Youngstown St., 7-0

Bulls win all six singles matches in straight sets

BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team swept Youngstown State during its Spring Break matches in Florida, defeating the Penguins, 7-0, Tuesday morning. The Bulls won all six singles matches in straight sets and won all three doubles matches.

UB’s number one doubles team of Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) defeated Anna Volka and Tanisha Welch, 8-2. UB’s number two pair of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) also won by an 8-2 score as they defeated Kelly Culbertson and Emily Thayer. Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) and Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Irena Lanc and Hannah Patten.

In singles play, UB won all six matches in straight sets. Novaceanu defeated Volkova, 6-0, 7-6 (4), while Popescu picked up a win at second singles against Welch, 6-4,6-1. Stan continued her hot play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Thayer, while Jacob picked up a win over Lanc, 6-3, 6-1. Toia won her match at fifth singles over Culbertson, 6-3, 7-6 (1), while sophomore Anna Subenkova (Riga, Latvia) won her match at sixth singles over Patten, 6-2, 6-2.

The Bulls continue Spring Break play with a match against the South Florida Bulls.
