ERIE, PA – The University at Buffalo’s women’s tennis team rolled to an 8-1 victory over Division II Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. The match was scored using the NCAA Division II rules of each contest counting for one point instead of Division I’s one doubles point awarded for winning two of the three matches. UB is now 4-1 overall while the Lakers fell to 14-9.

In doubles play, UB scored two of three victories. The number one team of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) knocked off Natalie Paparella and Charity Siegmund, 9-7. At number two, UB’s Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) downed Joanna Olmstead and Jennifer Daly, 8-3. The lone blemish for the Bulls on Saturday was in the third doubles match as Onessa Williams (Albany, NY/Albany) and Jamie Jackson (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) fell to Jamie Sutyak and Christine Mersch, 8-6.

UB easily took the singles matches without dropping a set to the Lakers. Nenova defeated Paparella, 6-0, 6-3, at number one. At number two, Novaceanu dumped Siegmund, 6-1, 6-1. Ortman scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Olmstead at number three. Number four Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) defeated Sutyak, 6-2, 6-3. At number five, Sabrina Carmona (Sao Paulo, Brazil/MMDC) downed Jennifer Daly, 6-2, 6-2. Jacob, at number six, defeated Mersch, 6-2, 6-3.
