Women's Tennis Drops Opener in Hawaii

Bulls fall 7-0 to top Division II program BYU-Hawaii

LAIE, HI - The University at Buffalo's women's tennis team opened its visit to Hawaii Thursday night with a 7-0 loss to one of the top Division II programs in the country, Brigham Young University-Hawaii. The Bulls fall to 6-4 overall while the Seasiders improve to 8-0 this season and have now won 37 consecutive matches.

The Bulls had a rough time managing victories in just five games. UB's top doubles duo of Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) fell, 8-1, to Adrien Hegedush and Judy Wong. UB's number two and three doubles teams dropped 8-0 decisions to their opponents. Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) and Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda) were defeated by Anna Anikanova and Amy Sun at number two while number three Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) were decsioned by Guriana Kornihona and Christal Schwenke.

In singles play, Maynard lost to Hegendush by a 6-0, 6-1 count at number one. Ortman was the lone Bull to record victories in both sets of her match, but fell to Weng, 6-1, 6-1, at number two. Zielinski picked up a game in her 6-0, 6-1 loss to Amy Sun at number four. The remainder of the Bulls' singles matches were 6-0, 6-0 decisions. Kollarova fell to Anikanova at number three, Wittman lost to Trisha Piercy at number five and Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) was defeated by Kornihona at number six.

The Bulls are back in action on Saturday against Division II member Hawaii (Hilo). The match will be played in Honolulu starting at 7 pm Eastern Time.
