Smaranda Stan Named MAC Player Of The Week

The junior won both of her singles matches on the week

BUFFALO, NY- Junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) was named the Mid-American Conference Player Of The Week following her performance against Temple and Army this past weekend. The award was announced today at the MAC’s headquarters in Cleveland.

Stan opened up play against Temple, winning her fourth singles match against Anastaiisa Rukavyshnykova, 6-4, 6-1. Stan then keyed UB to a victory against Army on Sunday morning as she joined sophomore Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) at first doubles as they won their match against Anne Houghton and Sarah Giles-Madden, 8-6. Stan then moved up to third singles against the Black Knights as she defeated Kristin Beehler, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The Bulls went on to defeat Army, 4-3, and they are currently 4-2 on the season.

Individually Stan is second on the team in singles victories as she is 15-2 on the year. In doubles play, Stan is 6-4 during the 2007-08 campaign.

Stan and the rest of the Bulls head down to Florida over the next week for Spring Break matches. Following that, UB starts its Mid-American Conference season.
